July block party draws violations

State Excise Police issued alcoholic beverage violations during a July 25 block party on Elm Street, Indiana Excise Officer Jenny Fults confirmed Thursday.

Fults said Miller’s Tavern and the Tom Thumb Tavern allowed customers to carry drinks between their establishments and a block party area on Elm Street, in violation of a temporary event liquor permit.

By law, a temporary event permit, such as the one obtained for the block party by the owners of Miller’s and the Tom Thumb, creates separate “premises” where beer and wine may be served.

Taking drinks in and out of the temporary event premises is not allowed, Fults said.

Excise police also issued a second violation on the temporary permit, saying partygoers were observed carrying liquor drinks inside the temporary event premises, Fults said.

She said only beer and wine are allowed inside temporary event premises.

Fults said both bars also received separate warnings from excise police, for allowing patrons to carry drinks out of the bars during the block party event.

Fults said the violations have been forwarded to the Indiana Alcohol & Tobacco Commission for possible prosecution.
