Peru man injured in motorcycle crash
A Peru man was airlifted to Parkview Hospital in Fort Wayne Friday evening suffering from a possible broken arm and broken leg he sustained in a two-vehicle crash.
Zariah Barns, 20, was driving a 1983 Suzuki GR6 eastbound on 1000 North at about 7:30 p.m. when a Chevrolet S-10 pickup truck driven by Raschel Hayes, 19, Peru, ran a stop sign at Meridian Road and 1000 North. Barns’ motorcycle collided with the passenger door of the truck ejecting Barns from the bike.
Hayes was driving south on Meridian, failed to stop at the intersection and turned into Barns’ path, state police reported.
After the impact with the motorcycle, the truck continued southbound and crashed into a home on the southeast corner of the intersection. The home was occupied, but no one inside was injured. The home sustained significant damage.
Barns was flown by Samaritan Helicopter to Parkview Hospital in Fort Wayne.
Hayes complained of arm pain and was treated at the scene.
Barns was wearing a helmet and Hayes was properly secured with a seat belt. Trooper Luke Bowyer said the safety devices did prevent more serious injuries in the crash.
This crash is still under investigation.
Trooper Mike Meiser, the Miami County Sheriff Department, the Peru Fire Department, the Denver Fire Department, and Dukes Hospital EMS assisted at the crash scene.
