Western Primary School received two awards in the WISH TV I Love to Read Challenge.
Each classroom that met the challenge of reading an average of more than 1,000 minutes during the two months was submitted for a drawing. Ann Loveless’ class won the first-grade drawing, and Loveless received $250 for classroom supplies.
Teachers who creatively encouraged students to read throughout the challenge were nominated for the Creative Teacher award. Nicole Irwin, a third-grade teacher at Western Intermediate School, won the $500 prize.
Her class has “Booknic” time for silent reading. Students take their baskets with a book and snack, find a comfortable place on a tablecloth on the floor to read, and then journal about their reading on paper plates. For every 50 pages read, students earn “ants.”
The teachers, reading challenge coordinators and students in Irwin and Loveless’ rooms earned a field trip to the Children’s Museum of Indianapolis for the awards ceremony. Indiana First Lady Cheri Daniels was the guest speaker.
Statewide, 117 schools participated in the challenge, with more than 33,000 students participating.
