Former judge defeats incumbent Miami County prosecutor

Emery takes GOP nod

Peru — Former Miami County judge Bruce Emery returned to the political fray and defeated incumbent Miami County Prosecutor Eric Huneryager in Tuesday’s Republican Party primary election.

Emery defeated Huneryager, who was seeking a third term, by 626 votes. Of 5,156 ballots cast, he received 56 percent of the vote.

“I was concerned,” Emery said of the early returns. “I think the result was from 34 years of building relationships in this community. People have confidence in me.”

With no polling done at the local level, Emery said, candidates don’t know how close the race would be.

Emery spent 26 years as a judge in Miami County and has served as the Peru City attorney with the administration of Mayor Jim Walker.

Huneryager called to congratulate Emery after the results were announced.

Emery said he doesn’t know if he will have an opponent in November and didn’t know of any potential Democratic Party candidates.

Huneryager defeated incumbent Republican prosecutor Wil Siders in the 2002 primary and ran unopposed in 2006.

He could not be reached for comment.
