Halfway through the Kokomo Tribune and Club Fitness 24’s Community Shape-Up and faces are looking thinner, clothes are becoming baggy and the bodies are becoming leaner.
And they should be.
The Shape-Up contestants banded together and lost just shy of 600 pounds in the first four weeks alone. The early morning gray team is still in the lead with the 1 p.m. green team nipping at its heels.
And with this kind of momentum, there’s no stopping this crew.
On Saturday, more than 45 of the contestants made it through the most grueling workout yet: a warm-up followed by 20 minutes of anaerobic interval training, 20 minutes of sprinting on the track and 20 minutes of Juan — a cardio and lower-body workout that had the challengers’ legs feeling like Jell-O and their hearts beating out of their chests. And that was all before they met trainer Carlos Diaz on the track for some military-inspired core conditioning work.
It’s safe to say there’s no way the group could have made it through that workout a month ago.
Up next for the Shape-Up crew will be to share their newfound love of fitness with their friends, family and community.
Club Fitness 24 co-owner Kim Coy told the contestants that they would each be bringing a friend to the session as a way to keep the effects of this contest rippling through the community. We didn’t call it Community Shape-Up for nothing, she said.
“Not only is it important for you to exercise and learn how to eat right, but it is important that you pay it forward,” she told the contestants. “We want to become a healthier community, one person at a time and, that starts with you.”
Check back next week to see more about this week’s challenge and see how the guests liked the workouts.

Shape-Up teams sprint to a close finish
Eight weeks ago, I walked into the first Community Shape-Up training session and I saw a group that could barely make it through 30 seconds of jumping jacks without looking a little queasy. I was nervous for the 89 participants who signed up for the Kokomo Tribune and Club Fitness 24’s annual weight-loss contest, to say the least.

Participants sprint toward finish line
When most of the Community Shape-Up participants walked into Club Fitness 24, they could barely make it through one round of their large-group training sessions. Many of them had never run a city block before.
- Trina Phillips-Nelson, in her own words: “Many of us braved the weather for Saturday’s 5K race. We ALL finished. I cannot begin to tell you how humbled I am by the actions of my fellow ‘challenge-mates.’

Shape-Up contestants learn about accountability
At the end of Saturday’s Community Shape-Up workout, more than 45 participants lined Club Fitness 24’s speed track in plank position — hovering their bodies several inches above the ground, balancing on their forearms and toes.
Their mission — hold the position as long as possible. Last one standing wins bragging rights as well as a stronger midsection. - Meet the contestants in this year’s challenge:
