Plenty of blame to go around

Resentment toward the rich is not what America is about.

No one denies there are many Americans suffering in this economy. But a recent letter writer was not totally honest in her article.

First of all, the housing market was a major part in why the economy shrank. President Bush sent a Cabinet member to Capitol Hill in 2005 who questioned Democratic Sens. Chris Dodd, Barney Frank and Maxine Waters. All of them told the Bush administration there was nothing wrong with housing, i.e. Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.

Next there was Goldman Sachs, which sold these risky loans that Bill Clinton pushed back in the ’90s. Anyone could show some form of income and get a home loan for which they would never have qualified back in the ’80s.

(FYI: The Justice Department just announced Aug. 10 that nobody at Goldman Sachs will be prosecuted. Imagine that: The Obama administration is infiltrated with relatives and past employees of Goldman Sachs. This should infuriate all Americans.)

So there is plenty of blame to go around.

As far as unions, I have no problem with private unions. Public union members should not make more than a private worker. Any local or state economy cannot sustain a balanced budget under those terms.

I do have a problem with hiring a union worker who does a terrible job on my home or such and makes outrageous rates.

As far as people receiving assistance, you have to admit there are quite a few who live with a significant other with a job and do not report that person in the household. Many have multiple children in order to receive more assistance.

If they can afford smokes and alcohol, why can’t they do a little more to support their family?

It was just announced that the posting of job openings has increased to 3.6 million. I would work a job for $8 an hour if it would support me. I might have to live with a friend or family member, but I would do it before I took from a child in need. There needs to be more of a push to get people one of these jobs and move them from welfare to work.

Let’s turn hearts toward each other

I know Father’s Day is long gone, but I was thinking of the great importance of the father.

The Bible talks in Malachi about the hearts of the fathers being turned toward the children. This is so important that the Bible says if it does not happen, the Earth will be smitten with a curse.

But that is not all the Bible says. It goes on to say the hearts of the children must be turned to their fathers. Both the fathers’ hearts and the children’s hearts must be turned to each other.

Being a father is one of the greatest privileges in the world.

May the hearts of the fathers truly be turned to the children, and the hearts of the children to their fathers. God wants to heal this land.

Good people wouldn’t do this to their neighbors. This common refrain is being heard over eastern Howard County where industrial development is planned for our farmland in the form of massive wind turbines.

How fortunate, that after years of trying to bring top-notch wind energy companies to Tipton County, this great choice is here for us — just at the right time. Tipton County badly needs the revenue from clean wind farm companies.

  • Letter to the Editor: May 10, 2013

As a taxpayer and concerned citizen of eastern Howard County, I have read some of the latest scholarly and peer-reviewed information available on industrial wind turbines. It’s not something I ever wanted to do or expected to do, and I do not pretend to be an expert even after reading much information.

More than 1,500 Hoosier children just received an early death sentence from the Indiana Legislature. By slashing the state budget for tobacco prevention and cessation by 38 percent, our lawmakers told us that the health and future of our children isn’t important.
