Dinner theater to benefit circus hall

Ole Olsen Players will lead interactive murder mystery tonight.

Peru — Each year, the Circus Hall of Fame has an art-auction fundraiser. Proceeds from the annual auction support the hall, which is one of the state’s 55 National Historic Landmarks and enshrines many “circus greats,” including posters, wagons, and other exhibits.

This year the hall of fame will have another fundraiser, however, it’s a mystery.

Rather, it’s a whodunit.

Today, as part of its fundraiser, the Circus Hall of Fame will partner with the Ole Olsen Players to present a murder-mystery dinner theater.

The interactive “Murder Under The Big Top” begins at 6 p.m., at the Eagles Lodge, 56 N. Grant St. The play was written by Pat Piper and Tammy Heilman.

Tickets are $35 per person and $60 per couple. The art auction follows the performance at 9 p.m.

“Each year we’ve done the auction, but this year we decided to try something new,” said David Spearin, the hall of fame’s director of admission. “Pat [Piper] is directing it and she has done quite a few of these murder-mystery dinners and people really like them.

Spearin said the murder-mystery dinner theater is staged like circus big top with a cast of 11 from Ole Olsen Theatre performing as circus members. He said audience members will also take on the role of circus performers and clues about the murder will be distributed throughout the evening.

Or at least until guests figure out whodunit.

“The audience will be given character names and the cast will interact with the audience,” Spearin said. “This is something new for us and I think people will really go for it. I’ve seen some of Pat’s shows and the audience likes them and they really enjoy participating in the discovering the mystery. It really should be quite a show.”
