A large group of residents in the latest proposed annexation area by Kokomo are expected to attend the meeting tonight of the Kokomo Common Council.
The Common Council meets at 7 p.m. in the council chambers of the Kokomo City Hall to consider final adoption of an ordinance to annex an area southeast of the current city limits, which includes a large portion of Taylor Township.
The proposed area to be annexed is located along the right-of-way of the U.S. 31 Kokomo Corridor that is under construction and expected to open sometime next year.
The new annexation would take in all the land around three major interchanges along the Kokomo Corridor at Markland Avenue, Boulevard (100 South) and Ind. 26.
The area includes almost 4,000 acres and 1,267 residents, including the unincorporated area of Oakford.
The Taylor Community School system is opposed to the annexation claiming that there will be a significant loss in revenues as more property owners hit the tax caps as a result of paying the higher city tax rate.
There is a group formed to oppose the annexation and they have hired an attorney and started the process of gathering signatures of property owners.
Mick Owens, one of the leaders of the opposition group, declined to answer several questions concerning the group’s future plans and how many signatures of property owners have been obtained.
No one spoke for or against the proposed annexation during the initial reading of the ordinance in October, because the city didn’t announce its intention until the day of the meeting.
