Four arrested after home burglary

Kokomo — The Howard County Sheriff Department is crediting a man's keen observation skills for the quick arrest of four men Tuesday afternoon.

Richard McCain called 911 just after 3 p.m. to report a robbery in progress at the home of his son, Mark McCain. The man reported that he saw a silver Cadillac parked in the driveway of his son's residence in the 11000 west block of 200 North.

As he approached the residence, according to the sheriff department, he saw a man wearing a red bandana running from the home and get into the vehicle. He was able to provide a partial license plate number as the suspect vehicle left and headed toward Ind. 22. As the man walked through his son's residence, police say, he noticed guns and jewelry had been taken. As deputies were saturating the area, a Cadillac matching the suspect vehicle was seen heading east on Jefferson Road from Hickory Lane. A deputy in an unmarked vehicle observed the suspects and as he began to turn around, they gained speed and turned in behind Kroger while still traveling at a high rate of speed. The suspect vehicle continued around to Wynterbrooke Drive and back to Jefferson Road. Deputies conducted a high-risk traffic stop on the vehicle at Jefferson and Dixon Road.

As deputies were securing the suspects, it appeared one man had been injured, according to a press release. Police say they later learned he was injured as he was climbing over a fence while fleeing the scene. The suspect was transported to the hospital for treatment before incarceration. The other three suspects were taken into custody and transported to the Howard County Jail without incident.

Arrested were Andrew N. Bess, 20; Thomas W. Rainwater, 18; Matthew S. Murphy, 19; and Ryan A. Cannon, 24. Police did not immediately release what charges the suspects face.

The Kokomo Police Department, Indiana State Police and Howard County Emergency Management assisted the sheriff department.
