Purdue solar car wins international contest

WEST LAFAYETTE — A solar-powered car made by Purdue University students has won an international contest for fuel-efficient vehicles for the second straight year.

The three-wheeled Pulsar took top honors in last weekend’s Shell Eco-marathon Americas competition in Houston, in which 65 college and high school teams from eight nations showed off the fuel-efficient vehicles they had designed and built.

The Purdue Solar Racing team achieved the equivalent of 4,548 miles per gallon with the Pulsar, which weighs 170 pounds and has a top speed of 25 mph.

The car not only won the solar-power category — it also took home the “People’s Choice Award.” The car also won last year’s solar-car competition.
