Hoosiers urged to help prevent spring floods

INDIANAPOLIS — After a long, snowy winter, state officials say it’s not too late for Indiana residents to prevent spring rains from causing them costly local flooding.

On Tuesday, storms carrying hail and moderate to heavy rains pushed across Indiana.

But the Indiana Department of Transportation says people can spare their neighborhoods from flooding by acting soon to remove brush, leaves and other debris that piled up over the winter from ditches and storm water drains.

INDOT Commissioner Michael Reed says removing that debris will prevent rainfall from storms from backing up behind clogged drains and entering basements or homes. Local floodwaters can also cause damage to farms and roadways.

INDOT’s reminder comes ahead of Flood Awareness Week, which runs March 15-19.
