Miami Correctional receives book grant

BUNKER HILL — The Miami Correctional Facility was awarded a $3,500 grant for the purchase of 268 books, officials announced Wednesday.

The facility purchased a wide variety of books with the money, awarded by the Indiana State Library and the Institute of Museum and Library Services.

The facility bought biographies of famous Americans, medical health guides, books on American Indian history, an occupational outlook handbook, a two-volume set of poetry and a set of Harry Potter books in Spanish.

Ann Hubbard, public information officer, said the grant helps support the Indiana Department of Correction’s goal of supporting the educational needs of offenders and offering tools to enhance learning and decrease illiteracy.

“It’s a proven fact that inmates who participate in educational programs are less likely to become repeat offenders,” she said, noting the IDOC offers classes through Ivy Tech Community College. “Receiving a grant like this is a win-win for the inmates, the facility and the community.”

Hubbard said both inmates and prison librarians made suggestions about which books to purchase during an assessment conducted by prison officials in December.

She said Miami Correctional Facility currently has around 10,000 books between its two in-house libraries. Since 1999, she said the prison has received over $25,000 in grants to support the educational outreaches at the facility.

The grant money is awarded for the express purpose of providing library resources to institutionalized persons, including those in prisons, state hospitals and children’s homes.
