The Kokomo Park Band will re-create an old-fashioned circus band concert when it presents “In the Center Ring” at 8 p.m. Wednesday in Highland Park.
Popcorn and drinks are provided by the Serving in Love team from Morning Star Church, and the Northwestern Lions Club will collect used eyeglasses.
Attendees are advised to arrive early to find parking and limited seating is available and lawn chairs are recommended.
In the event of inclement weather, the concert will be moved to Kokomo High School.
The free concert, under the direction of Steve Rhodes, is a re-enactment of a 1910 big top concert by the Ringling Bros. Band and features cornetist Keith Whitford and the KPB saxophone quartet.
Whitford will perform “Willow Echoes” by Frank Simon. Whitford is the assistant director of bands at Western School Corp. and is principal trumpet in the Kokomo Park Band and the Kokomo Symphony.
Whitford is also a member of the Marion Philharmonic and is a former member of the Fort Wayne Philharmonic, where he was employed for 18 years.
He is a graduate of Ball State University and earned a Bachelor of Science in music education and a master’s degree in trumpet performance.
Whitford has served five times as principal cornetist in the National Community Band sponsored by the National Band Association and is a brass adjudicator for ISSMA solo and ensemble contests.
The concert is the second to last installment of this year’s summer series, which is in its 108th year.
Song selections include “Gems from the Overtures” highlighting selections from operas that were popular at the turn of the century.
Ringling Brothers “Grand Entry (March)” by Al Sweet; “O-ga-lal-la-Indian Intermezzo” by Ted Snyder; “Creole Belles (Cakewalk)” and “12th Street Rag” by Euday Bowman will feature the KPB Saxophone Quartet.
The program will conclude with the familiar finale from “William Tell Overture” by Gioachino Rossini, used for years as the theme music for “The Lone Ranger” radio and TV series.
