Kokomo — A 17-year-old juvenile was taken into custody Sunday in connection with a shooting, the fifth since Wednesday night, that left a 23-year-old man in critical condition.
According to the Kokomo Police Department, investigators learned an altercation took place that resulted in several shots being fired. When police arrived around 5 a.m. Sunday, Taurean Jones, 23, was found lying in the backyard at 1108 E. Mulberry St. with a wound to his head.
Jones was transported to St. Joseph Hospital and later airlifted to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis. Police said Jones underwent surgery Sunday afternoon for injuries related to the incident. However, an official at Methodist Hospital said Sunday night Jones’ family does not want to release information about his condition at this time.
Police said before he was hospitalized, Jones was able to provide police with information regarding the shooting. The juvenile suspect was taken to the Kinsey Youth Center.
Officials said they currently have no evidence linking Sunday’s shooting with the four random shootings allegedly carried out by Turama L. Stitts on Wednesday evening and Thursday morning. However, the Kokomo Police Department did not respond to phone messages left Sunday requesting more information.
Stitts, 36, is due in court Tuesday for arraignment in his case. Two of the four victims from the downtown shootings on Wednesday and Thursday have died, and Stitts, who police believe acted alone, has been charged with two counts of murder and two counts of attempted murder.
Anyone with information pertaining to this investigation into Sunday morning’s shooting is asked to contact the Kokomo Police Department Hotline at 765-456-7017 or Detective Scott Purtee at 765-456-7322. People can also call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-262-TIPS and may qualify for an award.
