Holidays are here, downtown Kokomo

Annual Light Up Your Holiday Saturday.

Kokomo — In just two days, the jolly man with the big belly will start the holiday season off in downtown Kokomo. Santa himself will be traveling by train to Kokomo and bringing his reindeer with him for the annual Light up your Holiday hosted by Greater Kokomo Downtown Association. Although the man in red tends to steal the show, he’ll have to share the spotlight this year with new activities added to the night of festivities.

After you write your letter to Santa at Angie Meyers Design Studio, the kids can visit Santa to confirm his/her name is on the nice list, Santa arrives at 4:15 p.m. Then it’s off to Elf Hunting, the event’s new addition.

Nora Shaykhutdinov, Greater Kokomo Downtown Association COO, said the hunt is a creative way for attendees to see what downtown Kokomo stores have to offer.

“Everyone gets a post card and the hunting part includes kids visiting each store [where they will find a real-life elf] to get their postcards stamped. The postcards will be submitted in a drawing for a prize,” Shaykhutdinov explained. “It’s a fun way for people to visit some of the new businesses downtown and what the stores have to offer.”

Before the city’s skies are illuminated with lights switched on by Santa, the kids will have plenty to keep them busy. Kids can take rides around the square on the trackless train, make crafts at Planet Mind and at Howard County Public Library from 3 to 4:30 p.m. where kids will create Polar Express-themed crafts before they tune into the sights of downtown’s lights and live reindeer and the sounds of carolers on the square.

“[Greater Kokomo Downtown Association] is about growing a vibrant downtown and this event is for families to have a wonderful and fun weekend,” Shaykhutdinov said. “It’s about quality of life and that’s what we’re striving to promote with this event.”
