Lewis Cass teacher resigns

School board to act on resignation Monday

Walton — A social studies teacher resigned Thursday from his position at Lewis Cass Junior-Senior High School amid allegations of misconduct.

David M. Sims, a Galveston resident who had entered his fourth year of teaching social studies for Southeastern School Corporation, turned in his resignation late afternoon Thursday, said John Bevan, the corporation’s superintendent.

“It was his choice,” said Bevan. “He found himself in a position he did not want to continue in.”

The school board will act on Sims’ resignation at a meeting scheduled for Monday, added Bevan.

“Very honestly,” he said, Sims “did a good job in the classroom.”

Sims’ resignation came amid allegations that he had exchanged improper Facebook messages with a student.

Controversy erupted after the allegations were brought forth Nov. 5. School officials looked into the matter the next day, said high school principal Mark Karmel. Sims resigned his responsibilities as coach of the girls basketball team the day after that, according to Bevan.

Staff interviewed the parents bringing the allegations, the student, the student’s family and Sims, Karmel said. He also consulted with law enforcement as part of the proceedings. No charges were filed, however.

Karmel said the mother of the student involved had expressed no complaint about how the school handled its investigation.

Sims was not demoted or suspended as a result of the investigation, said Bevan. He voluntarily took a day off during the investigation.

The school board held an executive session Monday “to receive information concerning an individual’s alleged misconduct,” according to a public notice. Bevan declined to comment on whether the meeting related to the controversy surrounding Sims.

Sims did not return a phone call for comment.
