Attempted child abduction reported

Deputies say a man tried to abduct a 7-year-old boy.

Kokomo —

Howard County Sheriff deputies are asking for the public's help to locate a suspect in connection with an attempted child abduction early Saturday morning.

Deputies say a clean-shaven white male driving a dark-colored late-model pickup truck tried to pick up a 7-year-old boy from the front porch of his grandparents’ home in the 5000 north block of 200 East.

Howard County Sheriff Marty Talbert said deputies responded to the residence at 9:30 a.m.

According to Talbert, the child was playing on the front porch of the home when the dark-colored Chevrolet pick-up pulled into the driveway.

When the boy approached the truck, the driver asked the child to get in, Talbert said. The boy’s grandparents then came to the front door of the home and the truck backed out the driveway and left the area.

Detectives also responded to the area Saturday morning in an unmarked car, but were unable to locate a suspect vehicle.

The truck is believed to be a late-model standard-cab Chevrolet, with a 4X4 sticker on the bed.

The driver did not exit the truck, but spoke to the child through the window.

Talbert said while there hasn’t been any other reports of this activity, parents need to be aware at all times.

“I’m sure the child initially thought the pickup was a legitimate visitor,” Talbert said.

“The best practice is to instruct children playing outside to immediately go inside and summon a parent, adult, or guardian when someone they don’t immediately recognize arrives at their residence.”

Deputies are asking for the public’s help in finding this individual.

Anyone who may have observed a vehicle matching the description in the area of 500 North and 200 East on Saturday morning is asked to contact Deputy Larry Sparks at the Howard County Sheriff Department at 765-457-1105.
