Suspected drunken driver hits house

Police say driver tested at twice the legal limit.

A 34-year-old Kokomo man faces a drunken-driving charge after police said he left a southside bar at a high rate of speed early Friday and crashed into a house a few miles away.

Officers were first called to Center Stage Bar, 1833 S. Plate St., shortly after 1 a.m. to a report of Jamaine Cannon being an unwelcome guest, Maj. Brian Seldon reported.

Witnesses at the bar said Cannon’s keys were taken from him and a cab was called because he was intoxicated.

Cannon then snatched the keys from a bar employee and took off in his 1999 green Buick LaSabre at a high rate of speed prior to the officers’ arrival.

According to a Kokomo Police Department accident report, a witness said the speeding Buick was seen passing a red pickup truck at Mulberry and Ohio streets before it lost control. The Buick hit a house at 1144 E. Taylor St., careened off the garage and came to a rest on Ohio Street, according to police report. Police say Cannon then fled and was caught by police at Jefferson and Waugh streets.

He faces a charge of operating a vehicle while intoxicated and leaving the scene of an accident. His blood-alcohol content was .18, more than twice the legal limit of .08, Seldon said.
