Center Road closed for U.S. 31 work

Roadway shut down between 150 East and 350 East “indefinitely”

From staff reports

— Center Road is now closed between 150 East and 350 East, due to construction work on the U.S. 31 Kokomo Corridor bypass.

Indiana Department of Transportation officials said the road will be closed indefinitely.

Primco Inc., Fort Wayne, was low bidder on the $21.8 million Contract 3, which will take the new bypass from just south of Ind. 26 to the Kokomo Creek.

The new bypass will be an overpass at 300 South, meaning the bypass will go over the county road.

The official detour will take cars along 150 East and 350 East to Ind. 26.

Work includes more than 5 miles of mainline road construction, five bridges and five large culverts. The Ind. 26 diamond interchange is a major part of the project.

Bridges include the northbound and southbound spans over Kokomo Creek, the Scott-Youngman Ditch, and U.S. 31 over 300 South.

The contract completion date is mid-June 2012.

When finished around 2013, the new U.S. 31 Kokomo Corridor bypass will run from 2 miles south of Ind. 26 in Tipton County to 1 mile north of the northern U.S. 35 split in Howard County. The new bypass will be designed as a 13-mile “freeway” to improve traffic flow, reduce congestion and enhance safety for the motoring public.
