Kokomo hit by storm

Snowfall forecast up to 10 inches

— The weather forecasts for Kokomo kept getting worse Tuesday.

After starting the day with hopes the worst of the storm would pass to the north, it became increasingly apparent that Kokomo would be directly in the path of the low pressure system.

By mid-afternoon Tuesday, National Weather Service meteorologist Dave Tucek was predicting 6 to 10 inches of snow would accumulate in Kokomo overnight, with snow not tapering off until around daybreak today.

“The evening commute (Tuesday) will probably be just slushy, but it will be a slow go in the morning commute,” Tucek said.

Forecasters said a low pressure system, moving through the Ohio Valley from southwest to northeast, would combine with cold upper level air from the west to pound central and north central Indiana with snow. Wind gusts were expected to reach 30 miles per hour overnight.

Kokomo city officials Tuesday said they were prepared for what is expected to be the area’s largest snowfall this winter season, with city trucks out pretreating roadways.

The Indiana Department of Transportation was calling drivers into the Tipton subdistrict station to begin work at 4 p.m. Tuesday.

The snowfall should lessen to the southwest of a line between Indianapolis and Greensburg, but the bulk of the state, all the way up to South Bend, was under a winter storm warning until this morning. Travel conditions are expected to be dangerous in areas due to snow accumulation.

Today, temperatures are expected to remain around freezing, but the sun will return Thursday, and temperatures will gradually warm through the weekend to an expected high of 50 degrees on Sunday, Tucek said.
