Water company issues boil advisory for Indian Heights

Advisory affects 1,500 customers

Kokomo — Indiana American Water’s Kokomo District issued a precautionary boil water advisory Tuesday for approximately 1,500 customers in the Indian Heights subdivision.

An equipment malfunction allowed a water tank serving the Heights area to completely drain without refilling the tank, the company said. Area customers were without water for approximately one hour early Tuesday afternoon.

Customers in the affected area are advised to drink and cook with tap water only after boiling it for five minutes. Tap water can be used for washing and bathing, the company said.

The Indiana Department of Environmental Management mandates precautionary boil advisories to ensure high-quality water in the event water pressure drops below 20 pounds per square inch in any part of a distribution system.

Boil advisories usually last from 18 to 24 hours. Customers are requested to honor the boil advisory until further notice.

Indiana American Water serves approximately 21,000 customers, or a population of more than 57,000 in its Kokomo service area.
