PERU — Students at Ivy Tech Community College in Peru will soon be able to graduate with a nursing degree after Dukes Health Care Foundation of Miami County awarded the school a $407,000 grant to start a nursing program.
The grant comes after the Indiana State Board of Nursing approved in December the expansion of the college’s nursing program to the Peru campus.
College officials said the money will be used to fund two full-time nursing faculty positions at the campus for three years.
“This is really big,” said Marian Henry, dean of the school of nursing for the Kokomo region. “This is really going to help Peru and Miami [counties], and it’s going to give our students more accessibility.”
She said around 20 students will be able to enroll in the program, which will start operating in the fall.
The Peru campus currently houses a nursing laboratory that includes two patient-care simulators which students use to practice the emergency treatment of patients. The laboratory was funded by another grant from Dukes Health Care Foundation.
Henry said nursing students from other Ivy Tech campuses come use the laboratory, but now it will serve students in Peru as well.
She said one of the major aims of the expanded nursing program is to ensure a steady stream of qualified nurses for Dukes Memorial Hospital in Peru.
Ivy Tech Community College Kokomo Region Chancellor Steve Daily said the college was grateful for the grant money, which he said will help the local economy.
“We all are aware of the need to provide training for high-growth, high-demand occupations, and those that will provide a living wage,” he said. “This expansion of our nursing program in Peru will do just that.”
The Dukes Health Care Foundation of Miami County was created to support efforts to improve the health standards of the residents of Miami County, according to a press release.
