For the cost of a $10 raffle ticket, a lucky person could drive away with a 2008 Dodge Challenger SRT8, while at the same time helping a needy family.
Chrysler employees, for the past 10 years, have raised funds to provide Christmas for needy families.
Fundraisers in the past included a raffle for a Dodge Neon and in 2006 a raffle was conducted to win a restored 1971 Dodge Challenger.
With the reintroduction of the Challenger by the Chrysler LLC this year, the group has obtained one of the rare models for the 2008 raffle.
Each Dodge dealer in the United States will receive one of the first 6,400 cars produced. Mike Anderson Dodge in Marion agreed to sell the group the car at a discounted price.
The winning ticket will be drawn on Dec. 22 at Mike Anderson Dodge.
The first Dodge Challenger produced was recently sold at auction for $400,000.
The Dodge Challenger being raffled is Hemi Orange with black hood stripes. It has all the options, including a power sunroof, MyGIG radio and Goodyear Performance Tires.
“I wanted a chance to own one, but couldn’t afford it,” Kevin Anderson laughed. “This will give me a chance.”
Anderson works with a group of employees to raise the funds to benefit children every year.
“It was a group decision,” Anderson said of the idea to raffle off a new Dodge Challenger. “Our goal is to raise $400,000.”
The funds raised will be placed in an endowment so that interest from the deposited funds can pay for the annual Community Christmas Fund on an annual basis.
Anderson said Chrysler has approved of the raffle and has agreed to move up the production date to make it one of the first produced.
“Once the car is received in Marion, we will trailer it to different events to sell tickets,” he said. “When the car is won, it should have less then 10 miles on it.”
Debbie Landrum said the Christmas Fund provides Christmas for 100 families.
“This does something for the kids in the community,” Landrum said. “The money goes to a good cause.”
The committee purchases hats, coats, gloves and shoes for the children along with toys.
A Christmas party is held each year at United Auto Workers Local 685, where every child invited receives one gift from Santa Claus with their name on it, Landrum said.
“The remainder of the gifts are given to the parents to take home and open on Christmas day,” she said.
Tickets went on sale last Friday after the proper licenses were received from the Indiana Department of Revenue’s gaming commission.
“You can feel the excitement building,” Anderson said. “We are going to have pictures of the car being built and will include a book with all the documentation on the production of the car.”
Tickets can be purchased by sending a money order or cashiers check to the committee that includes a self-addressed stamped envelope. You must be over the age of 18 to purchase a ticket, no personal checks will be accepted.
Funds should be mailed to: Community Christmas Fund, P.O. Box 2123, Kokomo, IN. 46904-2123. Checks have to be received by Dec. 1.
