GREENTOWN — Greentown Marshal Jeff Bennett is investigating a string of car burglaries that took place in the early morning hours Sunday.
Bennett said Tuesday he’d had 19 reports of vehicles being broken into and ransacked, with various items stolen.
“It started on the south end and worked its way through the town of Greentown,” he said.
The office at the Greentown Grain Elevator, in the 200 block of North Mill Street, also was burglarized, he said.
“We’re believing it’s related to the same individuals that did the cars,” he said.
Bennett said some of the cars were locked, while others were not. Several had alarm systems that did not activate, and two of the cars were in unlocked, detached garages.
He advised people to “never leave anything of value in your car,” noting that the items stolen from cars included iPods, hand-held GPS systems, legal documents, wallets and purses.
Bennett said one person thinks he saw the burglars, but could not describe the two people. He also does not have a vehicle description.
“I’m sure whoever it was was in a vehicle because of the distance traveled,” he said.
