Crews fix broken downtown water main

Contractors working for Indiana American Water Co. worked overnight Monday to fix a 12-inch water main at the intersection of Union and Superior streets.

The company issued a precautionary boil advisory for part of the downtown area late Monday, but this morning water service was back for the affected area, including the Howard County Courthouse and Kokomo City Hall.

City and county government operations were not affected by the overnight water outage, apart from a Kokomo Common Council meeting scheduled for Monday evening. That meeting was canceled.

Workers at the site of the main break said the excavation at the site should be filled and pavement back in place by Wednesday. Damage was limited by the fact workers were able to quickly locate the shut-off valve.

Superior Street will remain closed at the intersection while the repairs take place. Union Street is open to traffic.
