Boulevard will close Monday for bypass work

Road will be shut down until next fall

The Indiana Department of Transportation announced road work is expected to close 100 South — known as East Boulevard — between 200 East and 300 East, starting Monday.

Motorists will be detoured along 200 East to U.S. 35/Ind. 22 to 300 East, then back to 100 South. The closure is expected to remain in effect until late next fall.

INDOT officials said they expect Fort Wayne-based contractor Primco will begin the work by building a large box culvert at the Canon-Goyer Ditch. Work will then begin on the East Boulevard bridge over the future U.S. 31 Kokomo Corridor route. Drainage structures will also be installed under 100 South. All of the work will require complete closure of the Boulevard/200 East route.

Contract II, awarded to Primco, includes 1.95 miles of the Kokomo Corridor’s mainline, along with construction of a diamond interchange at East Boulevard/200 East. The two travel lanes in each direction will be 12-feet wide with 11-foot shoulders along outside lanes and four 4-foot shoulders along inside lanes.

A 200-foot bridge at Kokomo Creek will be known as the Charlie Cropper Memorial Bridge.

Primco was awarded the work based on its low bid of $11,273,863.

A $345 million Major Moves project, the U.S. 31 Corridor at Kokomo will require six years to build. It extends from 2 miles south of Ind. 26 in Tipton County to 1 mile north of U.S. Highway 35 in Howard County. Designed as a 13-mile “freeway,” the investment is intended to improve traffic flow, reduce congestion and enhance safety for individual motorists and commercial carriers.
