NEW: Ind. Supreme Court considers driver's license suit

INDIANAPOLIS — The Indiana Supreme Court will decide whether to block the state from revoking driver’s licenses or state ID cards if a person’s name does not match Social Security records.

The court heard oral arguments Thursday in a class-action lawsuit that seeks to end the policy. An attorney for those who have had their licenses revoked said the policy should be overturned because some people have legally changed their names so that they no longer match Social Security numbers.

An attorney for the state said the policy should be upheld because it helps the Bureau of Motor Vehicles keep accurate records and prevent identity fraud.

It could be weeks or months before a ruling is made.
