Extended jobless benefits starting

Program wasn’t expected to be ready until Tuesday

INDIANAPOLIS — Indiana officials says some people eligible for extended unemployment benefits can apply now, rather than wait as had been expected.

The state said Wednesday the computer programming work took less time than expected.

The Indiana Department of Workforce Development says it has started posting vouchers for those who are eligible, with about a third ready Thursday. It says all vouchers will be posted by Tuesday.

The system is updated once a day.

The department says it will open its 27 full-service WorkOne Centers from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday and from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Aug. 6.

The department says about 80,000 people are entitled to about 250,000 weeks of payments combined.
