Expect U.S. 31 delays Tuesday through Thursday

Bridge work to produce temporary closures

— Travelers on U.S. 31 will experience delays next week as work crews perform bridge work just south of Kokomo, Indiana Department of Transportation officials announced Friday.

INDOT will close U.S. 31 in 20-minute increments at County Road 600 North in Tipton County while construction crews build a bridge over the highway.

There will be 20-minute daytime closures Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday for both U.S. 31 lanes northbound and both U.S. 31 lanes southbound — depending on which side of the highway work crews are using. The closures will also halt traffic at County Road 550 North and County Road 700 North as needed from 7 a.m. until 5 p.m. each day, INDOT officials reported.

The closures are necessary to allow work crews to safely raise and install structural beams for the new bridge, which is part of the ongoing work to create a new eastern bypass around Kokomo.

Walsh Construction, INDOT’s contractor for the $14.3 million U.S. 31 south terminus project, is building a bridge to take 600 North over U.S. 31, and a new ramp/bridge which will connect the new highway with existing U.S. 31.

The entire project, which will create a new 13 mile bypass around Kokomo, is expected to be completed this year.
