Kokomo — Apperson Way will be closed until late October at Markland Avenue, as the Indiana Department of Transportation reconfigures the intersection.
INDOT’s announcement Friday was the third plan issued in the past week by the state agency, as engineers have sought to balance traffic control with a tight construction schedule.
Work crews will erect barricades on Apperson to the north and south of the Markland intersection early Tuesday morning.
Contractors will remove poles and replace the automated traffic signal at the busy intersection, and will also widen the intersection to accommodate left turn lanes on Markland Avenue and Apperson Way.
The $885,000 intersection improvement project also re-aligns Apperson Way to eliminate an offset.
New ADA-compliant sidewalks are part of the project’s scope.
During construction, traffic on Markland will be restricted to one lane in each direction.
Traffic on Apperson Way won’t be able to either cross Markland or turn onto Markland.
The barricades will stop traffic just short of Markland, however, so there will be access to all of the businesses and residences on Apperson.
Drivers heading north and south should take Washington Street, Main Street (one-way southbound) or Home Avenue to avoid the Apperson/Markland intersection.
E and B Paving is the state’s contractor. The contract completion date is Oct. 28, 2010.
INDOT spokesman Harry McGinity said state officials had hoped to keep traffic flowing on Apperson during construction, but had to scrap plans to turn the intersection into a four-way stop.
Closing Apperson was the only way to complete the project before the end of the construction season, McGinity added.
