A rash of complaints of motorists disregarding school bus stop arms has prompted police to increase patrols near bus stops.
“We’re getting a lot of complaints lately of cars passing school buses with the safety arm extended,” said Maj. Brian Seldon. “We will be out cracking down on school safety.”
Seldon reminds drivers to watch for children walking to school and waiting at school bus stops. When a school bus’ stop arm is extended, traffic in both directions is required by Indiana law to stop, he said. This includes traffic in all lanes, in both directions, and on multi-lane roadways unless there is a physical barrier, a median, or a dividing section constructed to impede vehicular traffic.
Disregarding a school bus stop arm is a Class B misdemeanor punishable with up to 180 days in jail and a $1,000 fine. Police have a zero tolerance for anyone disregarding a school bus stop arm or speeding in a school zone, he said.
“It’s everyone’s responsibility to ensure our children are able to safely travel to school,” he said.
