For a new twist on an Easter tradition, an army of adult egg hunters took over Jackson Morrow Park late Saturday.
The response for the Kokomo Parks Department’s Adults-Only Easter Egg Hunt was a “monumental success” with about 2,000 participants, Parks Superintendent John Martino said Sunday. A few hundred more were turned away from the event, which was in its first year, when registration was cut off at 7:45 p.m.
About two dozen Kokomo area businesses donated more than $5,000 in prizes, including a 39-inch flat-screen TV. The event’s organizers scatted 4,600 eggs around the park, and the participants hunted in the dark for the prizes. The egg hunt was open to anyone 18 or older.
Though the total amount raised wasn’t immediately available, based on Martino’s estimate, at $5 per participant in advance and $8 the day of the event, the event could have raised between $10,000 and $16,000. But Martino noted the number of participants was a rough estimate and could be off a few hundred.
The money raised will go toward funding other Parks Department programs, including a youth Easter egg hunt earlier Saturday.
Martino said he would like to do the egg hunt again next year.
