Kokomo — Forget Uncle Sam for a moment — Cheryl Graham wants you.
On Sept. 11, the United Way of Howard County will host its 15th annual Day of Caring, and Graham, who is organizing volunteers for the event, needs more helping hands.
Before they set out to show how much they care, volunteers will meet at 7:30 a.m. at First Church of the Nazarene, 2734 S. Washington St., for breakfast and last-minute instructions.
So far, Graham said, church groups, families, businesses and other civic organizations have committed to complete more than 20 projects — ranging from landscaping to painting to cleaning up the Wildcat Creek — throughout the county. But Graham wants more.
She has room for everyone.
“I have a list of available projects, and I want more volunteers,” said Graham, adding the American Red Cross will also conduct a blood drive from 8 a.m. to noon that day at the church, and donors will receive an aluminum water bottle and a coney dog from Barker’s B and K.
“I just need to know the approximate number of people that will be signing up for the project and the type of project they want to complete. The whole purpose of this is to bring everyone together, learn where and what the needs are, volunteer and help solve the problems in the community.”
The Day of Caring acts as the official kickoff to its 2010 fundraising campaign. Last year’s campaign generated $1.4 million. This year, the organization has increased its goal to $1.8 million.
