Police investigate westside shooting

Fight erupts into gunfire, sending one to the hospital

Kokomo — A fight at the corner of Walnut and McCann streets Thursday afternoon left one man injured and police with little to go on.

Neighbors gathered around the intersection just before 4 p.m. as Kokomo police and Howard County sheriff deputies swarmed on the area in response to numerous 911 calls of shots fired.

When police arrival, officers spoke with numerous people who said that a fight had taken place, shots were fired and a vehicle had left the area with an injured man, Lt. Don Whitehead of the Kokomo Police Department reported.

Police checked both area hospitals for gunshot victims and found one man at St. Joseph Hospital being treated for minor injuries he sustained in the fight, said Whitehead.

The man, who was not identified, refused to cooperate with police.

Investigators recovered a handgun and several shell casings at the scene, prompting officers to cordon off the area with crime scene tape.

No arrests have been made at this time and the investigation continues.

Initially, police were looking for several men in a green car that fled the area after the shooting.

Police questioned a number of people, including the residents

at 1003 W. Walnut St., where the fight allegedly erupted into the shooting.

Several neighbors said they heard between three and five shots fired, saying they first thought it was a backfire from a passing car.

Neighbors, who refused to be identified, said police had been called to the residence for past incidents.

One man at the scene was handcuffed and taken to the police department for questioning, but was not arrested, Whitehead said.

Police did not release his name, but said he was driving a mo-ped in the area when the fight broke out. His mo-ped was lying in the street next to the crime scene tape.

Officers also located the green car a short time later at Monroe and Ohio streets, but no arrests were made.

Howard County Emergency Management officers assisted police in blocking off the area during the investigation.

Police are asking anyone with information to call the Kokomo Police Department at 765-459-5101.
