A Galveston family was shocked Friday morning to find a man sleeping in the family’s car in their attached garage. One family member held the intruder at gunpoint while waiting for police to arrive.
The Cass County Sheriff Department received a call at 7:57 a.m. Friday that someone had entered a North Conwell Street residential garage and had been found sleeping in a car. Deputy Kevin Pruitt and town marshal’s officer Brad Craven arrested 22-year-old Jerrod C. Landis, Greentown, on a charge of criminal trespassing, a Class A misdemeanor.
Brandon Jewell, whose wife, Jodie, called police, said he was awakened by family members Friday morning after a late night at work.
“I heard somebody running across the porch, and screaming going on, so I jump up, and just as I put my hand on the doorknob, I hear my wife screaming,” Brandon Jewell said.
Groggy, he took a gun and cautiously entered the garage, unsure of what he’d find. He yelled a few times for the intruder to leave, then, thinking he had scared the intruder off, he turned to enter the house again.
“I glance in the car, and there’s a brown Carhartt jacket in the passenger seat,” recalled Brandon.
The intruder was asleep in the family’s car.
Brandon rapped on the car door to wake the man, then ordered him out of the car and onto the ground while telling his wife to call the police.
“I just grabbed him by the shirt collar and told him repeatedly to get on the ground, and he didn’t get on the ground,” he said.
Police arrived a short time later and arrested the man.
Landis told police he had been drinking and did not remember anything from the previous night, according to Sheriff Randy Pryor. Law enforcement officers did not administer field tests to determine the man’s blood alcohol level.
Brandon Jewell called it a “scary situation” for his family, adding his two elementary-age children “were pretty shook up.”
“They had probably four minutes until they were late for school, and we still got them to school on time, I don’t know how,” he added. “They’ve probably had a heck of a day telling their story.”
Landis was out of jail Friday on $255 cash bail. Pryor expected him to appear in court Tuesday.
After Landis bonded out of jail Friday, he was re-arrested at about 6:30 p.m. by the Cass County Sheriff’s Department on a Class D felony theft charge. Police say he stole a Garmin GPS unit. As of 7 p.m. Friday, he was being held in the Cass county jail, but will apparently have the opportunity to bond out if he wants.
