There’s still no trial date set in the murder case against Bunker Hill resident Shane Golitko, after defense attorneys Thursday asked for a continuance.
Golitko, 24, is accused of killing a Kokomo assistant Scoutmaster last August as the 76-year-old man was guiding Boy Scouts on a hike along the Nickel Plate Trail.
As a prelude to a possible insanity plea, the court ordered multiple psychiatric examinations of Golitko. The examinations were completed this summer, but the results weren’t shared with Miami County Prosecutor Bruce Embrey until the start of October. During that time, one defense attorney dropped off the case, and Miami County Deputy Public Defender Kristina L. Lynn was added.
Three judges have conducted hearings in the case, due to the illness and death of Miami Circuit Court Judge Robert Spahr, the initial judge on the case.
The latest delay will push back any potential trial by at least another two months. Special Judge Douglas Morton Thursday granted a continuance until Feb. 14, in order to give defense attorneys time to interview Muncie psychologist Frank Krause.
Krause was one of three professionals to examine Golitko in the wake of the Anderson killing. The results of the examinations remain sealed in the court record.
Golitko’s mother, Valarie Henson, who police said was assaulted by Golitko just prior to the incident with Anderson, said she believes her son suffered a psychotic episode due to his refusal to take prescribed anti-psychotic medication.
Defense attorneys have filed the required notice for filing an insanity defense in the case, but apparently haven’t yet decided whether or not they’ll go that direction.
Police said Art Anderson was stabbed in the neck and bled to death as two young Scouts watched in horror. Police believe the incident was completely random, and that there was no connection between Anderson and Golitko.
Golitko remains at the Miami County Jail, where he is being held without bond.
