Jazz takes the stage at Kokomo High School auditorium Sunday. Popular ensemble The Side Street Strutters Jazz Band will have you tapping your feet to a bluesy beat, as the latest featured act to be presented by Kokomo Community Concerts serenades the crowd with 1940s classics.
Mary Rusch of Kokomo Community Concerts said the band’s sound draws sell-out crowds. The last time Kokomo hosted the act, composed of seven performers, there wasn’t an empty seat in the house.
“The Side Street Strutters Jazz Band is so great, when we brought them to Kokomo in April 2009, they sold the show out, so we just had to bring them back for a return visit,” Rusch said.
The Side Street Strutters Jazz Band will be bringing a special guest along with the performance: Shiny Stockings featuring Meloney Collins. Rusch said Collins adds a smooth luxury of vocals to the performance and will be singing today’s favorite tunes.
“This performance will have dancing, costume changes and Meloney Collins, who will be singing the hits of the day,” Collins said. “Concert-goers will be amazed at the large saxophone that the artist has to stand on a step stool to reach.”
More than anything, Rusch said it’s the easygoing sound to sing with.
“The Strutters have a rich, mellow sound and will have [concert-goers] singing along and clapping with the beat.”
