Jack L. Mellinger, 61, Kokomo, passed away at 1:19 p.m. Friday, Sept. 7, 2012, at I.U. White Memorial Hospital, Monticello. He was born Oct. 19, 1950, in Bedford, to William “Dutch” Mellinger and Bobbie (Dawson) Mellinger. On July 1, 2003, in Kokomo, he married Lisa J. (Hermann) Mellinger, and she survives.
He graduated in 1968 from Meadow Dale High School in Ohio, and later graduated in 1974 from Ohio Northern University, where he played basketball. He retired from the Kokomo Fire Department in 2011 after 32 years of service. He also had worked in real estate in the Kokomo area, Krogers, and Banner Flower House.
He was a member of AMVETS, American Legion, and fraternity Sigma Pi from college. He was a lifelong piano player. Jack enjoyed golfing, going to Lake Shafer, and spending time with family and friends.
Survivors include his wife, Lisa J. Mellinger, Kokomo; daughter, Kelly and husband Scott Williams, Greentown; daughter, Mandy and husband Craig Miller, Kokomo; brother, Bill and wife Janie Mellinger, Springboro, Ohio; and grandchildren, Spencer and Lola Williams, and Kellen Miller.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Services will be at 6 p.m. Friday at Ellers Mortuary Webster Street Chapel, 3400 S. Webster St., with the Rev. Roberta Cook officiating. Friends may visit with the family from 3 to 6 p.m. Friday, three hours prior to the service at the mortuary. Jack’s wishes were to be cremated. Family and friends will gather at the American Legion Post 6 immediately following the service.
Memorial contributions may be made to Kokomo Fire Firefighters Local 396 Disability Fund. Envelopes will be provided at the mortuary.
