Josephine Bakken-Beatty

Josephine Beatty, 93, died Wednesday, March 20, 2013, at Waterford at the Legacy in Kokomo. She previously lived in Sharpsville for 26 years.

She was a member of “Just A Wee Club,” which was established in the 1940s. The women of this club were in their early 20s, doing care projects for servicemen in World War II, March of Dimes, as well as supporting each other for the past 70 years. Jo and Tiny Pierce were the last members.

Jo was a past president of the Kokomo Art Association. She was skilled in oil, watercolor, and pen and ink. She had won several awards, including the Art Association’s “Sites and Scenes of Kokomo” Award. She had worked on and judged several art competitions in Howard County.

Jo was very creative in her art. She designed and crocheted miniature nativity characters for family and friends. One design (while in her 90s) won honorable mention at the Tipton 4-H Fair. She had given several nativities to the We Care Auction in Kokomo.

She was a member of the Kempton Lions Club and with her husband, Roger, attended many music shows in Kempton, Atlanta, Kokomo and Nashville, Ind. She and her husband, Roger, were members of the Stellite Camping Group, and they enjoyed travel and fellowship with the members.

She is survived by her children, Bill (Faye) Eckert, Fairfield, Ohio, Vivian (Steve) Heronemus, Kokomo, and David (Elaine) Bakken, Evansville; as well as grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husbands, George Eckert, Melvin Bakken in 1974 and Ernest (Roger) Beatty in 2010; as well as her sisters, Ruth Fording, Nellie Randolph, Bertha Parks, Kathleen Wyrick and Crystal Abney.

The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Boyer Funeral Home, Sharpsville. Pastor Bill Allison will conduct the service. Visitation will be immediately before the service at the funeral home from 8:30 a.m. until the time of the service. Burial will be in Sunset Memory Gardens, Kokomo.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Kokomo Art Association or Kempton Lions Club. Envelopes will be provided at the funeral home.
