Valerie L. Canady

Valerie L. Canady, 59, passed away at 11:55 p.m. Friday, Jan. 4, 2013, at Community Howard Regional Health emergency room, Kokomo. She was born Feb. 5, 1953, the daughter of Harvey and Nora (Carson) Mossholder in Kokomo.

She was a 1970 graduate of Kokomo High School, and continued her education at Indiana University, receiving her bachelor’s degree in education in 1981, and her master’s degree in 1985. She taught in the Kokomo-Center School system for 30 years before retiring. It was her passion, she was recognized as the 1988 State of Indiana Teacher of the Year, was made an honorary life member of the National Congress of Parents and Teachers in 1989, and recognized as the Girl Scouts of Tribal Trails’ Woman of Excellence in 2005. She started the reading program at Boulevard School, and was a member of Tri Kappa. She also was a founder of the Vietnam Veteran’s Reunion in Kokomo, and was involved in the Vietnam Veteran’s Memorial.

Valerie enjoyed many hobbies and interests, including spending time with her grandchildren, traveling, taking cruises, collecting, going to garage sales, gardening, quilting, and being generous with others.

She is survived by her former husband, James R. Canady; children, James A. (Amanda) Canady, Noblesville, Carrie (Larry) Stone, Indianapolis, Allison R. (Terry) Hendrickson, Anderson; grandchildren, Nicholas and Nolan Canady, Justin Rudich, Owen and Evan Stone, Lana Grace, Colton and Connor Hendrickson; siblings, Sharon (Joseph) Harrison, Spanaway, Wash., Cynthia Robins, Kingman, Harvey A. Mossholder, Delphi; a niece, Heather Wolfe, Spanaway, Wash.; an uncle, Dave (Debbie) Carpenter, Kokomo; aunts, Helen Webb, Kokomo, and Simone Mossholder.

She was preceded in death by her parents; uncle, James Carpenter; aunts, Beatrice Barnes, Ina Walker and Betty Bean.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Shirley & Stout Funeral Home, 1315 W. Lincoln Road, with the Rev. Penny Seifert of Parr United Methodist Church officiating. Following the service, she will be entombed at Sunset Memory Gardens. Friends may visit with the family from 4 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday at the funeral home.
