Dorothy Rachel Ellis, 79, Kokomo, went to be with our Lord Wednesday, Feb. 6, 2013, at St. Joseph Hospital in Kokomo. Dorothy was born July 5, 1933, in Caputa, S.D., to Pedro Duran and Freutosa (Padilla) Duran. On April 14, 1956, she married John W. Ellis Jr. at St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church in Kokomo, by the Rev. James Keane.
Dorothy was a graduate of St. John’s McNamara School of Nursing in Rapid City, S.D. She was a registered nurse at St. Joseph Hospital for 32 years, retiring in 1987. After retirement, she volunteered as a nurse at St. Joseph Hospital’s Clinic of Hope. She, along with the nursing team under the direction of Dr. Max Earl, was instrumental in developing the first Intensive Care Unit at St. Joseph Hospital. Over the years, she taught and instructed many classes and seminars pertaining to critical-care nursing.
She enjoyed spending time with her family, whether playing card games with her grandchildren or going back to visit family in the Black Hills of South Dakota. She also had a passion for playing bingo at the Crisis Center, where she introduced her grandchildren to it and passed the love of the game onto them. She could usually be found reading a good book or sitting on her back porch enjoying the flowers and birds. She was member of St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church in Kokomo. She was beloved by her children and grandchildren.
Surviving along with husband, John; are a sister, Bonnie Chapman, Seagoville, Texas; daughters, Ellen (Dean) Baker, Bunker Hill, Joan (Randy) Daine, Kokomo, and Geralyn Ellis, Logansport; grandchildren, Andrea Daine, Indianapolis, Taylor Daine, Kokomo, Katie Daine, Kokomo, and Dustin Baker, Bunker Hill; and a great-grandson, Mason Baker, Bunker Hill.
She was preceded in death by her father; mother; and a brother, Joe Duran.
Mass of Christian Burial will be at 1 p.m. Monday at St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church, 3155 S. 200 West, Kokomo, with the Rev. David Huemmer celebrating. Entombment will follow in Sunset Memory Gardens. Friends may visit with the family from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Ellers Mortuary Webster Street Chapel, 3400 S. Webster St., Kokomo. Scripture service will begin at 5:30 p.m.
