Dewayne “D.J.” J. Smith, 69, Kokomo, passed away at 3:40 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 14, 2012, at Community Howard Regional Health. Dewayne was born in Jalapa on April 26, 1943, to the late John Jay Franklin and Marycathern (Seagraves) Smith.
He graduated from Kokomo High School in 1961, and continued his studies at Indiana University Kokomo. Dewayne worked as a tool and die maker at the Chrysler Casting Plant, Kokomo for 34 years, retiring on Jan. 1, 2004. He was a faithful member of St. Luke’s United Methodist Church, Kokomo, where he was a greeter and served in every other capacity he was able. Dewayne never missed an opportunity to share the good news about his God and Savior. Dewayne was a past master of the Russiaville Masonic Lodge #82, a past patron of the Order of the Eastern Star, Scottish Rite in Indianapolis and the Marot Temple. One of Dewayne’s favorite pastimes was golfing. He played frequently and helped out at Chippendale Golf Course.
On Aug. 20, 1992, Dewayne married Linda L. Weaver, and she survives.
Also surviving are Dewayne’s children, Kelly Ann Smith, Dublin, Ohio, Brian Jay (Sarah) Smith, Chandler, Ariz., and Mark Joseph “Joey” (Aimee) Smith, Kokomo; a stepson, James Allen (Talois) Morse, Kokomo; grandchildren, Bailey and Claire Smith, Kokomo; three stepgrandchildren; a sister, Brenda Smith, Kokomo; and a half sister, Kay Zeigler, Hartford City.
Dewayne was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Lois Jean Smith; and a brother, David L. Smith.
A funeral service for Dewayne will be 10 a.m. Monday at St. Luke’s United Methodist Church, 700 E. Southway Blvd., Kokomo, with visitation one hour prior. The funeral service will be officiated by Pastor Mitch Norwood.
At the conclusion of the funeral, we will be taking Dewayne to his final resting place in Albright Cemetery, Kokomo. All of Dewayne’s friends and family are welcome to join for an evening of visitation from 2 to 7 p.m. Sunday at Ellers Mortuary Webster Street Chapel, 3400 S. Webster St., Kokomo, with an Eastern Star Service and Masonic Rites provided by the Russiaville Masonic Lodge #82 at 6 p.m.
