Ernest Smith

July 29, 1920 - Nov. 28, 2012

New Castle — Ernest Smith, 92, New Castle, passed away Wednesday, Nov 28, 2012, at Henry County Hospital. He was born July 29, 1920, in Williamsburg, Ky., the son of the late John and Hattie Johnson Smith.   

He was in the United States Army during World War II, 1939 through 1944, serving with the Fourth Infantry Division, landing on Utah Beach, D-Day, June 6, 1944. A life member of the Disabled American Veterans and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.  

He was an avid golfer competing in Smitty’s Open Golf Tournament, enjoyed fishing and coached Little League baseball. He retired from Chrysler Forge Division in October 1976.

A member of the Masonic Lodge in New Castle and Scottish Rite Indianapolis Valley. He was also a member of the Murat Shrine of Indianapolis and the Henry County Shrine Club.

Survivors include his children: Gail Marie Smith (husband Larry) Bertram, New Castle, Dianna Sue Smith Troxell, Kokomo, Donald Eugene (wife Ruby) Smith, New Castle, and Marilyn Smith Kucynski, Florida;  grandchildren, Asha Troxell Goodnight (husband Brent), Kokomo, Mia Troxell Hicks (husband Andrew), Kokomo, Daniel V. Bertram and Elijah Smith, New Castle, Michele Smith Pierson, New Castle, Brandon L. Smith, New Castle, Kimberly Smith Sparks, Fishers; 10 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and friend, Wilma Everman.

He was preceded in death by brothers Everette, Edward and Elmer, sister Elberta McMillen and wives Etta Marie Marlow Smith, Ruby Pierce Smith and Audrey Abshire Smith.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Marcum Community Funeral Home, New Castle. Dale McMillen and Spencer Baker will be officiating. Burial will follow in South Mound Cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. There will be a Masonic Lodge service at 7:30 p.m. Sunday. The VFW and American Legion will be conducting military honors at the funeral home.
