James Lloyd 'Andy' Andrews

Feb. 23, 1935 - Jan. 28, 2013

Jim “Andy” Andrews, 77, passed away at 8:30 p.m. Monday, Jan. 28, 2013, at his home, after a six-month battle with leukemia. He was born Feb. 23, 1935, to Marshall and Violet Andrews in Hemlock. On Nov. 5, 1955, he married Jean Ann Williams, who survives.

Jim graduated from Kokomo High School in 1952, and proudly served in the Indiana National Guard for eight years. He had worked at Sears Roebuck and Co. and Delco Radio before starting his career with Schrader’s Auto Parts in downtown Kokomo, where he worked for 28 years. In 1988, he began a 12-year career as manager of AutoZone on East Markland Avenue in Kokomo. He was known as “Andy” to everyone and loved people and working, so retirement was never mentioned. In 2000, he started employment at Indiana University Kokomo as a custodial supervisor until his illness.

Jim loved kids, and it showed. He and Jean Ann cared for more than 100 children through Catholic Charities and Welfare. He was a Boy Scout leader at Taylor School System for 24 years. Andy always loved camping, hiking, fishing and taking Sunday drives. In his spare time, he enjoyed woodworking, making birdhouses, cars and semis. He looked forward to playing golf every year with his National Guard friends. He was also very active in his church, where he was an elder, song leader and youth group teacher.

He is survived by his children, Cheryl (Ron) Woodward, Virginia, Cindy (Craig) Trott, Greentown, Christy (Mark) Geesaman, Kokomo, Rob (Laura) Andrews, Columbus, Steve Andrews, Indianapolis, and Sally (Brad) Weir, Kokomo. He was a loving grandpa to 14 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Marilyn Burr; brother, Ronald Lee Andrews; and grandson, Stewart Trott.

A special thanks to Dr. Annette Moore and the oncology staff at Community Howard Regional Health, and also to his great hospice care from Community Home Health nurse Jill Lancelle.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in his memory to the Judson Road Christian Church building fund.

Friends and family may call from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at Hasler & Stout Funeral Home, 112 E. Main St., Greentown. Private services will follow calling Saturday with Dr. Gary Carpenter officiating, and private burial will follow in Greenlawn Cemetery in Greentown.
