Janet Wentworth, 66, passed away peacefully Saturday, Feb. 9, 2013. She was born in 1946 in Elwood to Robert and Helen Elliot. She grew up in Greentown, where her childhood was filled with bicycle riding with her sister and best friend, Kay, foraging through the nearby Greentown glass quarry for interesting finds, and riding her horse, Penny. She loved driving her red Ford Gran Torino (though seatbelts in those days were optional).
She earned her B.A in education from Indiana University and her M.A. in psychology from the University of New Haven. She met Ronald Wentworth while at school and they married in 1975 in East Weymouth, Mass., and settled down to spend their 38 years together in Clinton, Conn. After some time spent teaching elementary students and children with special needs, she decided to become an amazing stay-at-home mother and homemaker, devoting herself to raising and nurturing her three children.
Janet was a dedicated member of the community. She was a member of the First Church of Christ Congregational in Clinton. She belonged to the Order of Eastern Star, Olive Branch Chapter 87 in Madison, Conn., was a member of the Grand Cross of Color, and spent time as an advisory board member for International Order of the Rainbow for Girls while her daughters were part of Branford Assembly 19.
Janet was a woman who touched many people in her life and rarely asked for anything in return. She could be seen working during the annual church summer fair or cooking turkeys at the church year after year for the nearby Thanksgiving soup kitchen. Janet was an avid reader who could always be found reading a book. She also loved gardening and every summer could be found working in her vegetable garden. A very private person, she was loved by all who knew her.
Janet is survived by her husband, Ronald Wentworth; her mother, Helen Elliott; her sister, Kay Brownlow; her children, Alison (Wentworth) Vance, Todd Wentworth and Jennifer Wentworth; and her grandchildren, Krystal, Joey and Peyton Wentworth.
Janet was preceded in death by her father, Robert Elliott.
A memorial service for Janet will be at 11 a.m. March 2 at First Church of Christ Congregational in Clinton, Conn., with a reception to follow in the Fellowship Hall.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to First Church of Christ in Clinton, Conn., in memory of Janet Wentworth. Condolences may be left at Janet’s online guest book at www.swanfh.com.
