Marion Charles Boger, 91, Kokomo, died at 8:55 a.m. Monday, Feb. 11, 2013, at Community Howard Regional Health System. He was born June 27, 1921, in Waldron, the son of Fred and Eunice (McCarty) Boger. On Oct. 11, 1947, he married Martha VanCleve, who preceded him in death on Nov. 8, 2008.
Marion was a 1938 graduate of Flat Rock High School. During World War II, he was a tech sergeant in the U.S. Army, serving from Jan. 17, 1941 to Dec. 3, 1945 in the 283rd Engineer Combat Battalion. After the war, he was a customer service representative for General Electric for 28 years. He worked for Wellman Thermal Systems for four years after they purchased the General Electric Plant, retiring in 1983. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Shelbyville, where he served as Sunday school superintendent for more than 30 years. He was a member of the American Legion Post 70, the Shelbyville Lodge F&AM for 50 years and was a Freemason for more than 50 years.
Marion enjoyed motorcycles as a young man, taught youth baseball for years and played bridge every lunch with his General Electric co-workers. He and Martha played bridge with friends and Marion became the county Grand Master Bridge player for several years. He was generous, but had to work two jobs for a while to support his family. He was a sports enthusiast, especially watching IU basketball and Cincinnati Reds baseball. He loved his wife of 61 years and during the last 8 years of her life, visited her in the nursing home every day. He enjoyed a good, home-cooked meal and had a great sense of humor. He will be missed by all who knew him, but especially by his family.
Marion is survived by two sons, Lee Boger and wife, Kathy, Kokomo, and Keith Boger and wife, Nancy, Clarkesville, Ga.; grandsons, David and Justin; granddaughters, Natalie, Mariah and Teannetta; great-grandchildren, Gavin, Cadi and Jude; nephew, John Cunningham.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; one son, Rodney Boger and sister, Maurine (Boger) Cunningham.
A memorial service will be held in May when Martha, Marion and their son Rodney will be laid to rest at the Lewis Creek Baptist Church Cemetery located a few miles south of Shelbyville on Ind. 9. Shirley & Stout Funeral Home & Crematory assisted the family with arrangements.
