Lillian R. Riffe, 91, North Berwick, Maine, formerly of Dover, N.H., passed away Sunday, Dec. 18, 2011, at Varney Crossing Nursing Home.
Lillian was a homemaker, born in Starkville, Miss., on Aug. 4, 1920, the daughter of James A. and Gladys (Bussey) Smith. Raised and educated in Winfield, Ala., she grew up as the eldest daughter of seven children. Her father, James, was a well-known veterinarian in the surrounding rural countryside.
Lillian married Eugene, a U.S. Marine stationed at the Norfolk, Va., Navy base near the outbreak of World War II, hence becoming a part of the “Greatest Generation.” Eugene served in the South Pacific for three years during the war. Afterward, the family moved to Indiana in the 1950s where the children grew up, and after retirement moved to Dover, N.H.
She is survived by her son, Robert Riffe, South Berwick, Maine; her daughter, Gloria Bolton, Kokomo; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.
Lillian was predeceased by her husband of 64 years, Eugene L. Riffe, in 2006.
There are no calling hours. Friends and family are invited to attend funeral services at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Tasker Funeral Home, 621 Central Ave., Dover, N.H. Burial will follow in Pine Hill Cemetery in Dover.
