Lena M. Grammer

Jan. 7, 1933 - Dec. 14, 2012

Lena M. Grammer, 79, Kokomo, passed away at 4:41 p.m. Friday, Dec. 14, 2012, in her home. She was born on Jan. 7, 1933, in Marion, Ill., to the late Carl Kendall and Pauline (Booth) Johns. Lena married William E. Grammer on Aug. 23, 1952, and he preceded her in death on Jan. 8, 2007.

Lena attended the Illinois School for the Deaf, and worked for more than 25 years in the laundry department at Howard Regional Hospital, retiring in the late ’80s.

She was a member of the Kokomo Deaf Club, and a local bowling league. She enjoyed traveling a lot with her husband, William. Their travels took them as far as California, and often led them to a casino and slot machines. Lena also enjoyed activities at home, such as crocheting and cross-stitch. Most importantly, Lena always spent time with her family, as they were very dear to her.

Lena is survived by her daughter, Rhonda (Kevin “Mike”) Bitner; grandchildren, Stacy (Rick) Bitner, Brian Bitner, Erica (Brady) Bitner, Troy Grammer and Sarah (Devin) Grammer; great-grandchildren, Blake, Gavin, Madyson, Landon, Kendall, Bradon and Little Brady, along with many others that affectionately knew Lena as “Grandma Grammer.” Other survivors include a daughter-in-law, Carolyn Grammer; a brother, William Kendall; a brother-in-law, Richard Grammer; and sisters-in-law, Mary Grammer and Peggy Hughes.

Lena was preceded in death by her parents; husband, William Grammer; son, Thomas Grammer; and a brother, Ralph Lee Kendall.

Lena’s family would like to thank Guardian Angel Hospice for the superb care Lena received during her illness.

There will be a funeral service for Lena at noon Friday at Ellers Mortuary Webster Street Chapel, 3400 S. Webster St. The funeral service will be officiated by Brady Davis, and sign interpreted by Patty Lindsay. Following the funeral, we will be taking Lena to her final resting place in Kokomo Memorial Park Cemetery. All of Lena’s friends and family are welcome to join together for a time of visitation from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday, also at the mortuary.

Contributions may be made in Lena’s memory to Riley Hospital for Children and Howard County Special Olympics. You are invited to read Lena’s obituary at www.ellersmortuary.com, where you may sign the guest book, view the tribute DVD, share a personal message, or order flowers for the family.
