Maxine Rich

May 1, 1925 - Nov. 16, 2012

Maxine Rich, 87, Kokomo, passed away at 5:30 a.m. Friday, Nov. 16, 2012, at Century Villa Health Care. She was born on May 1, 1925, to the late Raymond E. and Nera A. (Baker) Smith in Kokomo. On July 31, 1949, Maxine married Ralph Rich at First Baptist Church, Kokomo. They were married for over 62 years until Ralph passed away on March 23, 2012.

Maxine graduated from Kokomo High School in May 1943. She graduated cum laude from Franklin College in 1947. She was the first graduate from the college with a major in music. Maxine also attended Jordan Conservatory of Music in Indianapolis. She began her teaching career in 1947 at Young America High School, and she retired from Haworth High School in 1984, teaching English and music for over 40 years.

Maxine loved Shakespeare plays and attended annual events in Canada with her friends. She was a member of Saint Lukes United Methodist Church, Zeta Tau Alpha Sorority and Greek Club at Franklin College, as well as Indiana State Teachers Association.  

Surviving are her two sons, Stephen A. Rich, Indianapolis, and Brent (Clare) Rich, Indianapolis; one grandson, Michael Rich, Kokomo; one brother, Ross (Betty) Smith; and one sister-in-law, Lois (Bob) Lawson, Kokomo.

Maxine was preceded in death by her parents and husband.  

Funeral services will be noon Wednesday at Ellers Mortuary Webster Street Chapel, 3400 S. Webster St., with the Rev. Harold Williams officiating. Burial will follow in Sunset Memory Gardens. Friends may visit with the family from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the mortuary.

Memorial contributions in Maxine’s memory may be made to St. Luke’s United Methodist Church.
