Dr. Lili Ann Leavell-Mimms, 53, Indianapolis, passed away Saturday, March 16, 2013, at home with loved ones, after a brief illness.
Lili was born Oct. 10, 1959, in Anderson to Arnett T. Leavell Sr. and Lili Gholston Leavell.
Baptized at an early age, she was a lifelong member of Second Baptist Church. Lili was a strong woman of faith, always sharing a smile, she displayed kindness and heartfelt love for everyone she encountered. Lili credits her success to her belief in God, as well as a strong family support system, most notably her mother, husband and children. She resided in Indianapolis for 23 years.
At the age of 6, Lili knew she wanted to grow up and become a doctor. She succeeded. Lili graduated from Anderson High School. She received her B.A. in biology, pre-medicine, at Indiana University Bloomington. Lili graduated with clinical honors from Indiana University School of Medicine, and was Intern of the Year during her internship training at Howard University Hospital in Washington, D.C. She then trained and completed her anesthesiology residency and research fellowship at the University of Michigan Hospital Systems, Ann Arbor.
Dr. Lili worked as a clinical anesthesiologist for 22 years. She practiced anesthesia and pain management at St. Joseph/St. Vincent’s Hospital in Kokomo. She served as staff anesthesiologist at Methodist Hospital for 16 years.
Dr. Lili loved music and was an accomplished pianist, serving in church ministry for several years. Dr. Lili was also a successful businesswoman. In 2008, she launched the Aesculapius Medical Spa & Wellness institute.
A few of Dr. Lili’s memberships include: American Society of Anesthesiologists, American Medical Association, National Medical Association, NAWBO, Jack & Jill Inc., Dr. Lili has also served as a captain in the U.S. Army National Guard.
Dr. Lili was a very proud, nurturing and loving wife, mother, sister and daughter. She leaves to cherish her memory her husband, Kevin Darnell Mimms Sr.; children, Keli Denise Hayes, Courtland Leavell Hayes and Cameron Lawrence Hayes and stepson Kevin Darnell Mimms Jr.; brothers, Arnett Leavell Jr. and Dean Leavell; sister, Gaye Leavell Johnson (Calvin Johnson Sr.); grandchildren, Kevin Darnell Mimms III and Kywin Mimms; godson, Justus Belton; nieces, Nanette Brooks, Dr. Charisse Johnson, Camille Johnson, Esq. and Amber Leavell; nephews, Arnett Leavell III (Renae), Leslie Leavell (Jennifer), Dean Michael Allen Leavell II and Calvin Johnson Jr.; and a host of great-nieces and nephews, cousins, friends, colleagues and church family.
She was preceded in death by her loving parents, mother Lily Bell Gholston Leavell, and father, Arnett Thomas Leavell Sr.
A visitation in Indianapolis will be 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at The Church at The Crossing, 9111 Haverstick Road. Funeral services will be at noon Saturday at Second Missionary Baptist Church, 230 W. 14th St., Anderson. A visitation will be two hours prior to services. The Rev. William O. Neal will officiate. Interment will follow in Maplewood Cemetery.
